Mission Statement for the Safe Environment Department
The Safe Environment Department of the Catholic Diocese of Davenport is committed to fostering a culture of safety, trust, and dignity where all people—especially children, youth, and vulnerable adults—are protected and respected. Guided by the Diocese’s mission and rooted in faith, hope, and charity, we promote awareness, accountability, and compassion through education, prevention, and responsive care. As a Eucharistic community, we strive to reflect the Reign of God by ensuring every parish, school, and ministry is a safe and welcoming place where individuals can grow in faith and experience the love of God and neighbor.
Program
The Safe Environment Program includes Safe Environment Training (Catholic Mutual Group), Background Checks and the " Teaching Safety - Empowering God's Children" (VIRTUS) curriculum for K-12 youth. This program has been approved by the Bishop for schools and religious education.
We require all priests, deacons, seminarians, deacon formation candidates, all parish and school employees and volunteers working with minors and/or vulnerable adults, pastoral associates, principals, administrators, school teachers, coaches, school aides left alone with minors, host/classroom parents, DREs, youth ministers, Safe Environment Local Coordinators, and Knights of Columbus to complete all the requirements of the program before they can be employed or volunteer with our children or vulnerable adults.
The background check is run by an diocesan approved agency, Selection.com. Individuals might also be required to complete a credit check by this same company if they work with monies. We are very passionate about this program and feel it is very important. Contact your parish or school for directions on completing the requirements.
The Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People was established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in June of 2002; as part of an effort to address issues surrounding allegations of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic clergy. Visit www.usccb.org for more information concerning the the Charter.
In 2001, the Diocese implemented an updated policy regarding the sexual abuse of a minor by a Catholic clergy member or other Church personnel.
